A gonorrhea test shows whether the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae is in your body. It uses a PCR test on urine or on a swab. You do not need a referral, and only you see the result.
Why take a gonorrhea test?
Gonorrhea is an STI caused by a bacterium. You pick it up during sex without a condom. Many people notice nothing at all, women more often than men.
So you can carry it, and pass it on, without knowing. A test makes that clear.
Who is this test for?
This test suits:
- people who had sex without a condom
- people with a new partner
- anyone with symptoms, such as pain when peeing or discharge
- people who want to test for gonorrhea alone
When should you test?
Do you have symptoms? Then you can test straight away. If you have none, wait two weeks after the last time you had sex without a condom. Test sooner and your sample often holds too little material to find the bacterium.
What is tested?
This test looks at gonorrhea only:
- Gonorrhea (PCR)
The PCR test looks for the genetic material of the bacterium. That means very little of it is needed to spot an infection.
How is the sample taken?
You hand in urine or a swab at a certified collection point. It is quick, and it is handled discreetly.
Preparation
Handing in urine? Then do not pee in the hour before your appointment. That keeps enough material in your sample for a reliable result.
What does the result mean?
The result is detected or not detected. Not detected means no gonorrhea was found in your sample at that moment. Detected points to an infection. Always discuss a result like that with a doctor.
What happens after the result?
Your result appears in your own account. If treatment is needed, a doctor helps you further. Gonorrhea clears up well with antibiotics. Your data stays confidential.
Want a broader STI test?
Gonorrhea and chlamydia often occur together. Want to look more widely? Then an STI test for chlamydia, gonorrhea and trichomonas makes more sense than separate tests.
